Chemin des Bonshommes: A Section Hike from France to Spain

Overview

The Chemin des Bonshommes is a historic trail that stretches across the Pyrenees mountains. It was a medieval route used by the Cathars, a spiritual group considered heretical by the Catholic Church in the 12th and 13th centuries.

The Cathars used the Chemin des Bonshommes to flee persecution in France and seek refuge in the more tolerant regions of Aragon, now known as Catalonia, Spain. The trail starts in the French town of Foix and ends in Berga, Spain. It passes through rugged mountain terrain, ancient villages, and breathtaking landscapes. We will experience at least one night of wild camping.

Today, the Chemin des Bonshommes is a popular hiking trail, attracting outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. It offers both a physical challenge and a journey through history, allowing hikers to explore the region’s cultural and spiritual heritage. This section hike adventure requires you to travel with the essentials on your back, so we bid farewell to luggage on Day 2.

This is a 14-day tour, but because we know that not everyone has that time, we offer the option to complete the Chemin des Bonshommes in two stages. Join us for half this time, and half next time! See the itinerary for more information.

Details

  • We will be in some rural areas, and there are shops and cafés that only take cash, so it is important to have euros with you when you travel. Generally speaking, €300 - €500 should be fine for the tour, but you can plan your cash amount based on your personal spending plans while you travel. We have found it simplest to purchase euros from your bank prior to traveling to Europe. Another option is retrieving cash from an ATM at the airport when you arrive in France, which gives you the best exchange rate on that day. Tip: Make sure you are aware of your bank’s fees for international withdrawals, as well as other credit card usage fees.

  • Athara Adventures strongly recommends that you obtain travel insurance. Depending on the type of tour that you have booked, Athara Adventures may also require that you secure or show proof of other insurance.
