Roussillon: A Hidden World of Wine & Culture

Four-Day Wine Tour in Southern France

Next Tour:
19 - 22 September 2026

Discover a lesser-known corner of southern France where wine, landscape, and culture intertwine, without the crowds or pretense.

There is a part of southern France where wine is still deeply tied to the land, where small producers, ancient traditions, and dramatic landscapes define the experience.

Welcome to the Roussillon wine region, in the heart of Occitanie.

This is not a typical tasting tour. It’s a chance to step back to a time when meals were held slowly, when connection was honoured, and when life was inextricably linked with nature.

On this tour, you’ll explore:

  • Vineyards shaped by the terroir, producing unique wines through ethical practices

  • Small, independent vineyards rarely visited by tourists

  • The dramatic landscapes of the Pyrenees foothills and Mediterranean edge

  • A region shaped by Cathar history, resilience, and inspiring stories of courage and honour

  • An authentic side of French culture that has been lost in many parts of the world

You won’t just taste wine. You’ll understand it.

You won’t just visit. You’ll connect.

Roussillon Wine & Culture Tour

  • After pickup in Carcassonne, you’ll travel into a quieter, rural part of southern France, the Roussillon wine region in Occitanie.

This is a place of contrasts: vineyards stretch from the foothills of the Pyrenees toward the Mediterranean, shaped by diverse soils like schist, limestone, and granite. Along the way, you’ll encounter rolling hills, terraced vineyards, olive groves, and dramatic rock formations.

To reach our daily destinations, we typically spend up to an hour in the van each way. These drives are peaceful and part of the rhythm of the experience, offering time to get excited for what’s ahead or take in what you’ve just experienced. The region is remote, but everything is thoughtfully supported.

  • You’ll stay at the Hostellerie du Grand Duc, an elegantly restored hotel nestled in a quiet village surrounded by forest, mountains, and open space. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with both shared and single options available.

Evenings are relaxed and unhurried. There’s time to rest, connect over dinner, or simply enjoy the stillness of the landscape. This is a place where things naturally slow down.

  • Food and wine are at the heart of this journey. All meals are included, with dietary needs happily accommodated with advanced notice. Food is shared as a group, creating space for connection and conversation.

You’ll enjoy seasonal, locally inspired cuisine paired with regional wines throughout. This is not just about drinking wine, it’s about understanding it, experiencing it, and meeting the people who create it.

  • The overall activity level is gentle, with flexibility built into each day.

There are opportunities for walking through vineyards, villages, and historical sites, often on uneven terrain. However, all activities are optional, and you’re always welcome to take a break or sit something out if needed.

This experience is not about pushing yourself. It’s about enjoying the journey at your own pace.

  • Not at all.

There’s no need to speak French. Your guides are there to support you, and interacting with locals is part of the charm of the experience.

You also don’t need any prior knowledge of wine. This journey is about curiosity, not expertise. Even your Athara guides are always learning. It's part of the joy of being here.

  • Athara tours are intentionally small (7–14 people), creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere where it’s easy to connect.

Many guests travel solo and find that the shared meals and group experiences create natural opportunities for connection, while still having plenty of time for personal space when you want it.

You’re free to move between togetherness and solitude throughout the day.

  • "Sarah, Seoka, and Anna are terrific guides for this area. While not French, they are truly of this place and feel it in their bones. The history they shared added a lot to the trip’s value for me. They are also very kind, accommodating, and accomplished. The hotel was cozy and food was fabulous—breakfast and dinners especially." — Sandra S

"Athara Adventures put on an absolutely amazing experience for us in France. They were professional and very accommodating. Our stays were beautiful, the wine experiences and castle visits were spectacular, and their local knowledge made everything feel easy and accessible. It’s truly a trip of a lifetime." — Carrie Elizabeth
