A walking holiday shaped by landscape and quiet courage

This is not a rushed hiking tour or a self-guided walking holiday. It is a carefully supported experience for people who want to walk, explore and understand the landscape more deeply, while enjoying good food, local culture and time in one of the quieter corners of southern France.

The atmosphere is designed to be warm and supportive, without pressure to be constantly sociable. You can enjoy conversation and shared moments when you want them, while still having space to walk, reflect and experience the landscape in your own way.

The trip is structured enough that you do not need to manage the logistics yourself, but spacious enough that it does not feel over-programmed.

The Couserans is a distinct region within western Ariège, entirely covered by the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises and often associated with the wider Pyrenees National Park, dominated by Mont Valier, known locally as the “Lord of Couserans.”

This landscape of valleys, forests, mountain passes, caves, and rivers formed part of a network of escape routes during the Second World War. Along the Chemin de la Liberté, also known as the Freedom Trail, Allied airmen, Jews, and others fleeing persecution were guided across dangerous terrain into Spain. Many of those who risked everything to help them were women, farmers, shopkeepers, mothers, whose resistance took the form of mountain guiding, hospitality, silence, and moral resolve.

We do not attempt to recreate those crossings. Instead, we walk portions of this historic route in a way that allows the landscape to speak. Standing beneath Mont Valier or walking through the mysterious Sourroque forest, the scale of the terrain makes history tangible.

Walking distances, terrain, and daily pace.

This is a moderate walking holiday designed for mountain walkers who value history, personal stories, and the quiet power of landscape. It is as much about experiencing history and culture firsthand as it is about walking. There is an invitation to slow down, look closely, and honor the courage of everyday people against the backdrop of one of Europe’s most beautiful mountain regions.

Many guests choose this walking holiday as a wonderful way to experience the big mountains while carrying a day pack and returning to comfortable lodging each evening. Typical days involve:

  • 4–5 hours of walking

  • daily distances of 10–12 km

  • elevation gain ranging from 360–650 metres

  • varied terrain, including forest paths, rocky mountain trails, and open plateaus

  • The Couserans region sits within the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises and is often associated with the wider French Pyrenees landscape people think of when researching national park walking. The Couserans is a region within the central Pyrenees, offering dramatic valleys, high passes, waterfalls, forests, and the emblematic peak Mont Valier which stands at 2838 m and is the highest in the Couserans area of Ariège.

These walking trails feel quieter and more local than many headline holiday destinations, offering a sense of space and authenticity that’s increasingly rare on popular walking routes.

Along the Chemin de la Liberté, gouffres, or deep vertical caves or chasms, are a striking feature of the landscape, especially in the limestone massifs of the central Pyrenees. One walk includes a portion of the Chemin de la Liberté where we immerse ourselves in the magical atmosphere of this mysterious Sourroque forest. It is said that the Hadas, little fairies from the legends of the Gascony Pyrenees, are hiding in this green forest. We are in the heart of the Ariégeoise Pyrenees Natural Park, a protected area that feels separate from time.

  • This region played a vital role in Second World War resistance and escape networks and the land and trails represent the courage of ordinary people. Along the Chemin de la Liberté, people were guided over dangerous terrain into Spain, supported by ordinary locals, many of them women, whose courage often looked like hospitality, silence, and resolve. The values that drove resisters have been rooted here for over a thousand years, passed down through the generations.

There are a wealth of local stories, oral histories, legends, and customs that are from another time, yet perfectly suit the landscape, modern-day culture, and the region. Locals proudly relate stories of family members (many of whom were women) who were passeurs over the mountains, trained to fight the SS and hide in the hills, farmers who were part of the safe passage routes (as mentioned above). We weave these stories throughout the hikes and cultural site visits, so you don’t need any prior knowledge to feel the depth of what happened here.

  • The Couserans region has a deep-rooted mountain culture. Traditional markets, stone villages, pastoral farming, and museums dedicated to Pyrenean life reflect a strong local identity that remains very much alive today.

The culture, here, reflects the deep roots to the past. There are old values that remain in the Couserans that have even been forgotten in other parts of France. The dedication to integrity, hospitality, helping one another, comes down from thousands of years. This is a place where we find examples, time and again, of people who risked or even sacrificed their lives because they were unwilling to compromise their values or turn against their neighbor. We see this throughout WWII where Jews and those targeted by the Nazis were guided over dangerous terrain to safety, hidden in plain sight, or simply hidden and protected.

In the Couserans, a strong paysan, mountain farming culture still shapes daily life - rooted in pastoral traditions passed down through generations in this corner of Ariège. Farmers once wore wooden clogs, sabots, for work in the fields and mountain paths, and today these clogs remain powerful cultural symbols, often seen during festivals and celebrations.

Traditional Couserans folk dancing and music are still very much alive, performed at village fêtes and seasonal gatherings. Accompanied by fiddles, accordions, and bagpipes, these dances celebrate community, resilience, and a deep connection to the land, offering a living glimpse into the rhythms of Pyrenean rural life that continue to endure with pride.

  • You stay at La Cachette de Nina, a traditional French country estate set within a wooded park, just a short walk from Saint-Girons. The atmosphere is warm, authentic, and country chic.

Evenings are relaxed. After returning from the day’s hike, you’ll have free time to rest, enjoy the hotel grounds, walk into town, or book a spa treatment, before gathering for a long, unhurried French dinner

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. Meals are shared as a group and designed to support active days outdoors. Lunch is typically picnic-style on hiking days, with snacks and pacing that suit being on the move.

Dinners are traditional French three-course meals enjoyed slowly, often with local wine on the table, because good food and drink are part of the culture here, not an add-on.

Dietary requirements and allergies are accommodated wherever possible.

More detail can be linked here: Meals and diet restrictions.

  • Group size is intentionally small:

    • Minimum: 7

    • Maximum: 14

This is a founder-led experience supported by local guides who live in the region and know the hidden corners and flexible trail options. The group naturally spreads out on the trail, then reconnects at natural stopping points. Leadership is steady, warm, and attentive, so solo travellers feel included without pressure.

  • This is a moderate walking holiday with extended time on your feet balanced by rest and cultural exploration. It appeals to those searching for structured guided walking holidays that combine movement with depth.

    Typical hiking days include:

    • Average distance approximately 11.5 km / 7 miles

    • Time on feet around 4 hours per day

    • Terrain dirt paths, forest trails, rocky sections, sustained ascents and descents

    • Big mountain views with sections above the tree line

The region is ideal for those who enjoy expansive nature walks, authentic country walks, and immersive mountain environments rather than crowded tourist trails.

The pace is steady and supportive. Guests are encouraged to find their “forever pace”, a comfortable rhythm that can be sustained over multiple days of hiking. The group moves together at a consistent pace, with natural pauses for rest, views, and regrouping along the way.

Because you are based in one location for the week, routes can be modified or shortened if needed. A support vehicle is available on flexible days.
